Chile Investor Visa: A Comprehensive Guide

The Chile Investor Visa offers two investment options for foreign investors:

1. Invest at least $500,000 USD in a Chilean business that directly produces a product or service for sale.

2. Hold no less than 10% of voting shares or publicly traded stocks in a Chilean company and serve in a management position or a specialized technical role.

This visa is valid for two years. If you wish to convert your visa to permanent residency after this period, you must maintain your investment or stock holdings until you receive your permanent residency status.

Why Invest In Chile?

Here are a few reasons why Chile is an attractive option for investors:

1. Strong Economy: Chile is one of the most economically developed countries in South America, and it has been attracting a growing number of foreign investors.

2. Stable Government: Chile has one of the most transparent governments in South America. In the 2024 global anti-corruption index, it ranked 32nd, just behind South Korea (31st) and the United States (29th).

3. Fast Path to Residency: Foreigners can apply for permanent residency after living in Chile for just two years, and for citizenship after five years.

4. Language Advantage: Chile is a South American country where a large portion of the population has a good command of English, making communication easier for foreigners.

Application Process:

Applying for the Chile Investor Visa involves three main steps:

Step 1: Secure Your Investment and Documentation

First, you’ll need to make your investment and gather all the necessary documents. You will then submit these documents to the Chilean Investment Promotion Agency  for review. If your project meets their standards, they will provide a letter of support.

Required documents for the application include:

  • Identification: Passports for all applicants, valid for at least six months; police clearance certificates for the last five years for all applicants over 18; and documents like marriage or birth certificates to prove the relationship between family members.

  • Proof of Financials: The main applicant must provide proof that the investment has been made or is in progress, as well as a letter of financial commitment to any minor family members.

  • Medical Certificates: All applicants must provide a medical certificate issued within the last six months.

  • Application Forms: This includes the investor visa application form and a personal information form for each applicant.

Step 2: Submit Your Online Application

Once you have your letter of support, you can submit your visa application through the Chilean online visa system at https://tramites.minrel.gov.cl (available in Spanish and English).

It’s important to note that Chile no longer accepts investor visa applications from tourists already in the country. Processing times can vary from several weeks to several months, depending on the specifics of your case.

Step 3: Arriving in Chile

After your visa is approved and you arrive in Chile, you have 30 business days to complete two final steps:

1. Register with the Chilean police to receive your PDI (Policía de Investigaciones de Chile) card.

2. Visit the Ministry of the Interior to get your Chilean ID.

Once these steps are completed, you are legally able to live in the country.

Dependents:

With a Chile investor visa, the main applicant’s spouseparentschildren under 18, and children between 18 and 24 who are still in school can also be included on the visa as dependents.

Visa Validity:

The Chile Investor Visa is valid for two years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you continue to meet the original conditions.

After legally living in Chile for one year with this visa and meeting conditions such as staying in the country for at least 183 days per year and paying local taxes, you become eligible to apply for permanent residency.

Chilean permanent residency is a lifelong visa. However, it can be revoked if you leave Chile for more than two consecutive years. If you need to be abroad for a longer period, you can apply for an extension of your permanent residency at the nearest Chilean consulate before the two-year period is up.

After living legally in Chile for five years, foreign nationals are eligible to apply for Chilean citizenship.
